RTB Chinese Singing Competition 2008 Round 2

13 July, 2008 Jayden 16 comments

Friends and I worked volunterality as a usher at RTB today to assist Xin Xiu Wen Lai Singing Competition (Brunei’s RTB Chinese Singing Competition) Round 2, 2008. The 6 of us arrived as early as 11am to get briefted on our job scope and position.

//(from left) Me, Carmen, Queenie, Shenny, Bii and Whai.

Meekiong and ahwhai are assigned to collect and stick stickers on the guest as a ‘pass’. Carmen, queenie, Shenny and I are the ushers. Our tasks is to lead guest to thier seats and simply enjoy the show. The singers will be arriving at 1pm so we got a lot of free time to spare. I did my usual runaround for some shoots.

//The Studio before the arrival of guest.

//This is the view from the stage. Contestants will be facing the seats filled with judges and audiences (plus the crew too) with increased heartbeat here.

Speeches from the 2 RTB DJ marks the official start of Round 2 of the singing competition.

//Samba dance from Le Swan Studio is the ‘appetizer’ before the main show.

After the soft samba dance from the 4 soft guys, the 2 DJ gave the cue by introducing the top 20 singers. Semi finalist presented their song one by one to the judges and audience with confident and energy. Results of the singers are calculated on the spot and announced on the day itself. Another Hiphop dance is presented by Le Swan Studio, allowing some time for the calculation of the contestants’ score.

Hip hop dance from Le Swan, Saiful and Shikin is inside.

//who is that girl looking at the camera with the ’shh’ pose?

And finally, the Top 8 winners are . . .

//No. 8 – 唐福明

//No. 7 – 温仁豪

//No. 6 – 刘玉忆

//No. 5 – 邱净凯

//No. 4 -  沈家豪 (pic from e-huawang.com)

//No. 3 – 周添玲

//No 2 – 沈秀群

//No 1 – 孔雪妍

Big Congratulations to them! No.1 being the singer with the highest score accumulated. Hopefully, I’ll be able to do an update on the Final Round of this singing competition. I would not write a detailed comment on their singing because I’m not ‘in this field’ and I don’t sing good too. However, it was good to hear some classic song like ‘Zheng Yang’ by “Penny” and others. I almost forgot on the existence of this song and it’s one of my favourite. Thanks for reading.

SATA (Something about the author) – Did anyone realised that No. 4 and No. 7 is missing? When they announce the winners, I jot down thier Contestant Number on my mobile phone, like. No.8 – 3, No.7 – 5 and so on. When I get back home and was about to blog, I forgot that top Semi Finalist were given a new set of numbers! Luckily that my sister took some snapshot of the contestants and it helps me in identifying them. No. 4 and No.7 is the one that she did not shot because I took the camera away from her for something else. I’ll update No.4 and No.7 ASAP. It is either 林仁春, 陈一帆, 温仁豪, 沈家豪 or 刘慧珊.

Behind the stage of the Schwarzkopf Hair Show

4 July, 2008 Jayden 19 comments

2 weeks ago, Roger messaged and asked whether I wanted to be a model.

MODEL?” I questioned myself. I never done anything like that before and it’ll be cool. I was excited and accepted gladly.

Selection of model took place in Hair Cut City Salon on 1st July. I thought that I will 100% be selected as a model after i confirmed myself earlier with Roger but no.

“Siap, why select lagi!” I thought again. I’m not yentao, not physically fit, not really tall and don’t have special feature. No chance already. The only advantage I have is my thick, 4-month-no-cut’s hair!

On the day itself, the lady in charge asked “Those who cannot cut short hair stand on the left and those who can, stand on the right’. I stood at where I was standing originally, the right. I was thinking that this will score me a higher chance.

After some discussion and selection, all of the guys standing on the ‘you-cannot-cut-short-my-hair’ corner got dropped out. The same goes to the girls except 1 or 2. This mean I’m in as a hair show model! All haircut and dye is done on the first day. It starts from 3:30pm to 7:30 (for me, there’s a reason why) and the others stayed until 11:30pm to finish everything including the selection of their clothings. We were offered ayamku as dinner, not bad =]

Day 2, 2nd June 08

All touch up, hair wash and styling is done in the morning. After lunch around 2pm, all of us gathers at Rizqun International Hotel for reharsal. we were offered ayamku as lunch (again). The show is held at the ballroom on the 4th floor.

We did reharsal, briefed on the position to pose on and the introduction to the whole flow of the show later at 7:30pm. After reharsal, it’ll be make up sessions for all models, including me.

It’s not only the first time I do modelling but also the first time I’m being applied make up to my face! I took the advantage of the spare time, opportunity and the ‘willingness-of-girls (people) to-get-photographed-after-make-up’ psychology to take pictures of them.

Photos

//Jia Yi with her unique sleepy eyes.

//the girls, check out the huge hair, we teased her by calling her to use her hair for car keys, mobile phones storage while running the show. lol

//Zemah

//Would the Chef get tempted? This picture feels sexy.

//”Let’s peek in the dark” It’s Zemah again, all pose and idea by me. =p

//Fanny and Mike, this angle looks some what like a wedding photo!

//Group photo (from left) of Zemah, Neesa, Adeq, Fanny and Mike.

//I just love her red/pink colour on her hair. I also found this picture to be sharp among all the photos I took. She has got the ‘I-want-to-eat-you’ emotion here. =p

//JiaYi and Nina, both posing after doing “Live Cut” on the show itself.

//Group Photo

Curious about my new hairstyle? The Simpsons/Army Look? Well, let’s do a before and after comparison.

//This is me, days ago at the Xtreme.

Behold. Introducing my new short, army haircut!

//I went in the salon as the guy with the longest hair and came out with the shortest. lol. In fact, I don’t really hate this hairstyle or is regretted cutting it short. If it’s weren’t for this haircut, i wouldn’t be able to know what ‘hair show’ model is all about, wouldn’t be able to know more great friends, wouldn’t have the chance to take these photographs and wouldn’t receive one of these as a gift!

//Gift Baskets of Schwartzkopf’s Product worthed B$200! I’m selling $150, anyone? (Have no use for these with my current haircut)

//On top of that, we were given complimentary dinner at the ballroom @ Rizqun.

It was another great experience! For more photos in an album, please look through here @ Facebook. All Photography by Me. (except the one with me inside) Kindly drop comments to show some support and appreciation for the photos.

SATA -

I drove the new Mazda 6 today! It’s powerful and smooth. There’ll be another beach + sunset photographs to blog. Farewell party’s pictures not completed yet. Gotta go KB this Sunday Morning for Project “Chloe” and attend HSBC Post Event celebration in the night. Probably beach this Saturday. Busy busy. Shower me with comments. Thank You.

Xtreme Pursuit; Before and After

27 June, 2008 Jayden 9 comments

BEFORE …

Stage 1 of the Tri-Xtreme Season 2 is held on 22nd June 2008 and Team’s Registration is at MD’s Sport’s Field. Registration starts at 8am to 8:45am, followed by announcement and actual game starts at 9:30am sharp.

//Team’s registration table

//Overview of the field

//Team Silverplay, Team 50

Without going into details, the challenge, (or Treassure Hunt, Xtreme Pursuit) took place around the whole of ‘Gadong’. The ‘rough’ perimeter of the ‘zone’ surrounds Guan Electronics, Nyonya, Justoys, Sushi Tei, Harajuki, Happy Union down to Cafe de’ Paris, Tk Restaurant back to Sin Kew Hin, Borneo Clinic, The Mall (all floors, except basement. lol) and towards Unitek and TT Blue and finally, returning to DeeJay, WYWY, Jaya Hypermart and Happy Motoring Sdn Bhd. I bet you guys can roughly visualise the areas to be covered.

It is divided into 4 ‘Zones’ namely, Zone H, Zone S, Zone B and Zone C. (HSBC). Within a time frame of 3 hours, we are required to answer all 100 quiz (estimated because I forgot the total number, help filling in?) along with 6 Bonus Challenge to be completed.

Examples of the quizes are,

//Quiz 22 to Quiz 45 of Zone “H” (The Mall).

22. i don’t like chilli
- Chill Cafe (by cancelling the ‘i’ because ‘i’ don’t like)

23. A sign of global warming
- Heatwave (Self explanatory)

27. Shout ME once done
- Bingo (Self explainatory)

33. This man is edible
- Mr. Pizza (He’s a pizza and is edible)

Looking back at these question put a smile on my face because I can still recall the feeling, the excitement and voices of friends shouting out the correct answer during the day itself. And, of course, I’m more happy when i see answers which are given by me eg.

28. the pod ran away with my shoes
- itop (ipod – pod = i, full clothing – shoes = top, hence itop)

64. Freedom with a bit of assistance
- Freego (Self explanatory)

There’s no pictures taking throughout the 3 hours of the challenge because we’re all concentrating on the answers. We only did 1 bonus challenge out of 6 and obtained 1 mark for ‘participating’ because we got the answer wrong some more. lol. We got back to the MD’s Meeting Point before 12:30pm to hand in our Answer folder. We were supplied with Mac Donald meal and mineral water for lunch. At 1:30pm, there’s a group photo shots and announcement of qualified team of 40 out of 102 for Stage 2; XTREME ADVENTURE.

After naming numerous Team Name and Team Number one by one until 40, our team name, Silverplay and Team 50 did not get its call. We were disappointed and left the field.

“I’m so dissapointed we didnt get into the top 40.”
“Not even 40% out of the 100 teams?”
“I really felt like crying but didnt la.”

//quoted from Carmen’s Blog

“sighs` the truth is still we are not in the top 40 teams. SAD SAD SAD, it’s a sad sad situation..”
//quoted from Shenny’s Blog

“So *thumbs up* to Silverplay! *Thumbs up* to our leader, Jayden who did a great job leading.. hahaha. “
//Not a disappointment quote, but it’s one of my favs, from Carmen =p

//Cool side view, Carmen =]

Best Logical Bet came true after all!
Stage 1 > Lavish Dinner

AFTER …

Some miracle happened! I’ve received a call from Alvin Tien from HSBC on 24th June 2008 that our team got in the Top 40! He said that one of the team dropped out (which I was too happy to ask about it why) and our team are actually the Top 41 out of 102! HAHAHAHA. It’s my first time to be qualified for Stage 2! (Our team didn’t get in during HSBC’s Tri Xtreme Challenge Season 1 and BSM’s Walk-a-hunt.)

Bet Logical Bet didn’t came true. Hm

Stage 1 > Stage 2 > Lavish Dinner? or
Stage 1> Stage 2 > Stage 3 > Prize Presentation + Lavish Dinner? We’ll see =]

It’s so ‘last minute’ that they didn’t change their link in this page. Don’t, don’t tell me it’s a prank?

//this is how we look before the game and after the call but definitely not after the announcement of teams qualified on the day itself. KNS’s Hanluen is trying to act cool here, not cool la bro =p

SATA – I hope this post is ‘lively’ because it has more pictures of peoples, esp my friends and I. I’ll be participating Stage 2 this Sunday, wish me and my team luck on solving the puzzles. My hair might look like bushes because I have not cut my hair since CNY (4 months) and lucky that there’s a hair show coming for free hair cut, i might blog about it. More photos next post.

Best logical bet from Tri Xtreme 2008; First Look

We received our goodie bag from HSBC on “Tri Xtreme Challenge Season 2″ on 18th June 2008, 4 days after the Registration date @ Maggis Hua Ho.

HSBC Tri Xtreme Challenge Season II

//Registration at Manggis Hua Ho

Tri-Extreme Challenge Season IITri-Extreme Challenge Season II

This Goodie Bag contains
1. Tri-Xtreme Season II Polo Shirt
2. Tri-Xtreme Cap
3. Tri-Xtreme Badge with Team Number
4. Invitation to the Tri-Xtreme Post Event Celebration
5. Instruction to Stage 1 Challenge
5. The Bag itself?

Tri-Extreme Challenge Season II

//I like the design of the cap this year, it looks so much better and more sporty compared to the 2006’s version.

Tri-Extreme Challenge Season II

//They even have holes for ‘air free’. (I don’t know what do they call it). By the way, we are in Team 50, agreed on the name Silverplay by my team members of Shenny Tang, Carmen Chang & Han Luen.

Tri-Extreme Challenge Season II

//Introduction to Stage 1’s Card. (1 per team)

Photos of Season I is available in Facebook group – HSBC Tri Xtreme Challenge Season II

Personally, I think HSBC spends a lot on this event, we are paying $20 ($10 for HSBC customer) and the benefits from the goodie bag itself is definitely worth more than $20 or $10. Even if the goodie bag doesn’t worth so much, try to view the event in the organiser’s perspective, there’ll be a lot of LARGE posters and banners to print for the event day itself, the cost of organising the games plus the printing of ‘folders’ with game/challenges instructions. The pre-event’s numerous printing of thousands of catalogs for awareness.

Let’s do a simple math.
B$60 per team (2 HSBC for $10, 2 Non-HSBC for $20)
$60 x 100 total team = B$6000

That’s B$6000 for the total ‘revenue’ they take earn from us.

And they are giving out money prizes as much as
No.1 = 8000
No.2 = 4000
No.3 = 2000
Total = 14k !

14k minus 6k = 8k to be spent from the bank’s pocket capital. This is purely a calculation on ‘Money in from us & Money out from them’ without adding all those advertisement and printing cost!

More benefits without ‘advertisements’
I have not include the free Ipod Touch/Ipod Nano8GB/Ipod Nano 4GB with sums up roughly $5200 for the winners! Wait, each of us will be receiving our very own Participation Certificate at the end of the day as well (printing cost?). In all of the rounds, participants will be receiving free supply of foods from local fast food restaurants (Ayamku, Ideals etc in 2006’s event) and these are added up to theirs costings as well.

Tri-Extreme Challenge Season II

//The celebration for the post-event 2006 were luxurious!! (more costing =p)

In 2006’s event, buffet of different foods (western, eastern) are placed in a long stretched table displaying mouth-watering appetizers, food, meals and deserts along the man-made beach in Marine Centre @ The Empire Hotel. There were unlimited sushis and the quality of the food are definitely of high standards. We could ask for lambs, beefs and fishes as much as our stomach can take it. This year, the post-event celebration will be held at the same place as well. (these are costs to HSBC as well)

We got Goodie Bag, proof of Cert, Luxury Food, Exciting Game! Without further calculation, we all understands that the benefits from just joining the event worthed more than $20 (or $10).

But WHY? Why are they spending so much in giving prizes and benefits to us? What do they gain?

1. Brand Building? Make the word HSBC looks more class + powerful yet friendly?
2. Encouraging more users to sign up accounts with HSBC?
3. For the fun? HSBC, more than a bank?

4. Someone like YC will question and blog about it? Free advertisement? If that’s one of their aim, they had achieved it =P

What do you think? Well, whatever the reason is, the challenge is on this Sunday, 22nd June 2008 and I’m excited. :)

Best Dream Bet = Stage 1 > Stage 2 > Stage 3 > Prize + Lavish Dinner
Best Logical Bet = Stage 1 > Lavish Dinner > Secretly ‘Tapao’ ? (I’m kidding)

SATA (Something about the author) – My laptop’s modem broke down and there’s no espeed/broadband/nearby wireless for me to use. =[ I can only surf and blog in cafes for the time being. Work remains to same but it’s already been a long time since I’ve gone up to Ulu Ulu Resort. I miss that place and heard that the place has been improved further. There’s gonna be a pool table some more! UBD has not been calling me and I’m nervous. I don’t really like the “media function” in WP which whenever I need to upload a picture, i need to press “add media button > media library > show > insert into post > repeat add media button”. I’m want a Canon dSLR~

Brunei’s Second RTB Chinese Singing Competition 2008 Round 1

10 June, 2008 Jayden 31 comments

On Air

//On Air

RTB’s 2nd Xing Xiu Wen Lai Mandarin Singing Competition round 1 is held yesterday on 8th June 2008 at RTB Studio, Brunei Darussalam. It starts as early as 1pm where contestants need to arrive early to take attendance and be briefed on the procedure.

Although it is a “Competition”, the format of it isn’t like “Xin Guang Da Dao” or “Jue Dui Superstar” in other countries where contestants stands in the stage, sing and get judged. Compliments and Critiques are given directly on the spot. Format this year in RTB is of no stage and every contestant’s recording will be done in a small studio. Judges will be judging their song at a later date by hearing from the voice recorded. The quality of the song matters most and other miscellaneous factor such as ‘clothing’ and ‘on stage performance’ is not taken into account in Round 1. If i’m not wrong, Carmen Tao will be one of the judges as well as other certified judges.

//The recording studio looked like this.

2nd RTB’s singing competition doesn’t not allow contestants to sing with a hand held mic but with a “hanging mic” instead.

Contestant X : “I’m not so used to sing like this.”
Crew Y : “Hold the overhanging mic with your hand and sing lo.”

Here’s the procedure, pick your number out of random and ones with Number 1 will be the first to sing, followed by 2, 3, 4… until the last. The one singing are allowed around 1 minute of testing their voice, volume, key and distance of them from the mic. Once the one minute is over, real recording will start and the ‘On Air’ will be light up. When it is “On Air”, no one is allowed to enter or leave the Studio A until the recording finishes to prevent recording unnecessary sound. Once the contestant finishes his song, his karaoke disc will be given back to him and the next contestant repeats the process, 1 minute of testing etc …

Not this overhanging Mic

//Contetants singing with the overhanging mic in front of her

To be frank, i was awaken by my sister yesterday because she woke up earlier than me to practise her singing =P She said that its stated in the press that no audience is allowed. I confirmed with several friends and they said the same too. We, the supporters choose to hang out at CheeseBox as alternative outing until my sister and carmen messaged

“yo man.. u guys not coming to support?”Carmen
“Ui.. Haha. If u wana come. Can come. Bring ic only. Shenny they al here =p”My sis

After receiving it, all of us rush with haste to RTB Studio in Bandar. Although it is not open for all audience, a small amount is allowed, like..

//majority are contestants and some supporters.

Jonathan Tee and Friend

//Contestants too, Jon Tee with his “I LOVEEEE YOU” (ai hen jian dan by David Tao). p/s = got ppl keep singing your song to remind you of the day? hehe

This is very different from last year’s 1st RTB Singing Competition where all the contestants are performing on stage in a hall that can accommodate roughly 300-500 people (estimated, someone confirm it please?). Your performance is open to all and your capability in singing is judged directly by hundreds of people, friends or family with free entrance as audience. This year, your audience will be around 10 to 15 people at most only so this helps for those who are afraid of performance with crowds.

On the day itself, i didn’t take the effort to memorise the names of the singer and their songs of the ones I like or the ones which are nice. From my vague memory, i remembered that there’s a girl who sing ’sa gua’ nicely, the singer of ‘cha jian er guo’ sang it nicely too. Someone sang ‘bu neng shuo de mi mi’ by Jay. The last contestant sang his song like Jacky Cheung. The tutor from Micronet sang his song nicely! The guy who sang “Bu Dong” from MD have a unique voice.

//Final Round Best Photos pages, my friend Mr. PK (bottom left) is there.

Ark.. Ke Yi Qiao Ta Shen Yi Dian Ma?” – said PK and he’s being shot at the “Ma” moment. Lol
(Ark.. Can turn up the volume a little?)

I love the overall colour of the magazine in purple colour and the magazine in printed in a good material. It was raining that day and we used the magazine to cover our head while running to our car in the parking area. shh Too bad my face did not appear in the front cover. (hidden meaning)

According to Jasmine,

11th June – Judgment day..
12th June – Singer and their song will be posted online at http://www.e-huawang.com
15th June to 4th July – Announcing each Top 20 contestants daily.

Anyway, this ends my post.

Something about the Author – There’s nothing funny happening in the studio except I found out that “L.Sing” is older than me, according to “Brain Age Check” in her Nintendo DS Lite. However, even though I appear younger than her in the game, the calculated age is much older than what I am now. LoL. Angelina is having the same age as me in “Brain Age Check”. Friends and Family like HuaLik and gang, LanSing, Carmen, Shenny, Winnie, Jasmine, Angelina, Jon Tee, LinXuan are joining this time. Good Luck to all of them. (did I miss anyone? let me know)

Do participate in many events when opportunity arises, especially when you are young. At least we’re able to tell stories of the moment experienced when we grow up. HSBC’s Tri Extreme II here i come.
